Life Skills
The Life Skills Program at The Arc Nassau is designed to empower individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities by teaching essential skills for independent living. Through a variety of hands-on activities and tailored instruction, participants gain confidence and practical abilities in areas such as communication, personal care, budgeting, and job readiness.
Curriculum:
Personal Hygiene and Self-Care – Teaching daily routines, grooming, and hygiene practices.
Money Management – Budgeting, saving, and understanding basic financial concepts.
Domestic Responsibilities- House cleaning, organizing, meal preparation,
Communication Skills – Building effective verbal and non-verbal communication, including active listening.
Social and Relationship Skills – Navigating friendships, work relationships, and understanding social cues.
Job Readiness and Workplace Etiquette – Resume building, interview preparation, and understanding workplace expectations.
Nassau Works is The Arc Nassau’s vocational rehabilitation service, dedicated to helping individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities build meaningful careers. Through personalized support, job training, and skill development, participants gain the confidence and experience needed to succeed in the workplace. Our team works closely with each individual to match them with employment opportunities, providing ongoing assistance to ensure long-term success and independence in their chosen careers.
The Arc Nassau’s Advocacy and Support Groups provide individuals and families with the resources, guidance, and community they need to navigate challenges and promote positive change. Through these groups, participants gain a voice in advocating for their rights and access to services, while also building connections with others who share similar experiences. Our supportive environment fosters empowerment, education, and lasting relationships.
The RESPECTS Program (Recognizing Every Special Person’s Efforts, Contributions, Talents, and Strengths) is designed to foster self-advocacy, social engagement, and community inclusion for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Through structured activities, workshops, and mentorship, participants build confidence, develop interpersonal skills, and cultivate a sense of belonging in their community.
