The year 2018 has brought new and exciting changers to The Arc Nassau. The Arc Nassau underwent a massive facelift for the New Year. It began with the replacement and upgrade of our exterior. Volunteers from the Redeemer Community Church led by C.A. McDonald spent several Saturdays meticulously replacing our old rotten siding with a beautiful new facelift.
The volunteers would gather every Saturday morning and begin the work of removing old siding and replacing it with new. Donations of wood and new siding were received from Pat Edward of RPM Lumber. The transformation was astonishing and the completed project gave a breath of fresh air into our formerly dull, outdated exterior.
Once the exterior was completed, The Arc Nassau began work on the interior of the building. The Fabulous Finds Thrift Store was re-located to the front of the building. The merchandise was inventoried and revamped giving the store a fresh new look. Since 100% of the profits from the store go directly to the individuals that we serve, improving the look will hopefully improve the revenue stream created.
The thrift store contains something for everyone. There are household items like dinnerware, glasses, vases and framed art. A children’s section has educational toys, books and games. There is a variety of furniture including tables chairs and desks along with bedside tables and curios.
The most exciting changes have come to our Adult Day program. The space has been transformed into a nurturing environment to learn. The paint donated by Board of Directors member, Donna Thompson, transformed formerly gray walls into a bright green and blue. The lockers have bedazzled names of each participant. Clients are now given a choice of activities to participate in. There are learning stations for music, language, art and reading. There is also a movie viewing section where program participants relax comfortably while enjoying their favorite flics.
The entrance used by the participants of the program is now covered so that they are not exposed to the elements while entering and exiting the building. Wheelchair ramps lead participants into their bright new learning environment.
For the past 40 years, The Arc Nassau, located in Yulee, Florida, is the only local nonprofit organization providing Adult Day Training Services for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
Ark of Nassau provides a myriad of service and training opportunities through Adult Day Training (ADT), Transportation, off-site Adult Day Training for employment, Supported Living, Respite Care, Personal Care, Volunteer Opportunities and Community Involvement. In 2017, we served approximately 31 individuals in these various programs.
Specifically, the ADT Program provides a variety of educational and training activities consisting of instruction in cooking, cleaning, money management, computer usage, art and music, social skills, job skills development, personal hygiene and community involvement. ADT is offered Monday through Friday from 8:30 am to 2:30 pm.
Access for ADT activities is provided through the Transportation Program that brings individuals throughout Nassau County to and from their homes to participate in agency programs. Our vans travel approximately 462 miles per day as we service the cities of Fernandina Beach, Yulee, Callahan, Hilliard and Bryceville.
In 2017, The ARC Nassau received additional funding through a grant from The Able Trust to assist individuals with disabilities with resume writing, interviewing techniques, job skills and job placement. Through this grant, we are able to market and utilize local business partners seeking employment services and establish new relationships with a diverse group of local employers to secure paid employment placements that match the candidate’s skills and interests. Job seekers are assisted in registering with the EmployFlorida Marketplace for updates and leads on local businesses seeking to hire qualified individuals with disabilities.
Already, in just the first year of the program, The Nassau Works program has been able to provide training and assist over 30 candidates in seeking employment. Nassau Works continues to develop relationships with local employers to match their employment needs with qualified candidates. We are actively recruiting individuals with barriers to employment who need assistance.
