Our Vision and Our Commitment

The Arc Nassau’s vision is to grow, nurture and expand our ability to provide a full array of programs and services to adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. We plan to do this by: establishing site-based, quality training opportunities and long-term employment; providing scholarships for individuals; increasing fundraising activities; and building community partnerships.

The Arc Nassau originally was organized as Hands & Hearts in the 1970s by family members, community leaders, civic organizations and educational professionals to support individuals with disabilities. In 1981, the current The Arc Nassau facility was built on land donated by Rayonier, which established The Arc Nassau’s permanent roots in Nassau County. Through the years, many new services have been developed to keep pace with the changing needs of Nassau County’s disabled residents.

Today, The Arc Nassau offers all Nassau County adults with developmental disabilities a range of programs and services from personal care to job skills development to community inclusion. By offering specialized educational and motivational programs, we can ensure each individual’s maximum participation in all aspects of life.

Our People Commitment

For our participants, we promote life skills training and employment opportunities in our Life Skills Development program by providing job skills training, cooking classes, safety programs, field trips, art and music appreciation.

Our Community Commitment

For our community, we foster inclusion activities for everyday life experiences by participating in trips to the local library, art shows, fishing field trips, nature walks, beach outings and more. In addition to our outings, we are always in search of valuable community partnerships to bring volunteers in to help educate our participants in the world around them. Workshops regarding art, music, health & wellness, gardening, games & recreation are some ways we engage volunteers for community inclusion.
